Gratitude

There is some debate among my peers whether or not happiness is a choice. It is less arguable that gratitude is something we can decide to cultivate and emanate.

People that nurture grateful thinking and express it in their lives regularly have been shown to have increased energy, empathy and optimism--all things that can increase our success at happiness.  A Harvard mental health study from 2011 found that people who write about what they are grateful for visit the doctor less and exercise more!

Perhaps sometimes it's difficult to shift our thinking away from habitual worry or self-judging or critiquing others but try to practice gratitude as an alternate and perhaps an antidote to these.  Try reframing situations as positive by finding the positive spin for yourself.  Try keeping a gratitude journal to practice thankfulness.

If you're undergoing major change or are having intense stress, try this: before bed think of five things from the day that you are grateful for. Upon awakening, think of five things you are grateful for and see if things don't seem a little bit better!  Sometimes we cannot change our circumstances and then especially we can focus on what we can change:  our own point of view and response to our situation.

“Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.”

― Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose

Today I am grateful for my health and the beautiful nurturing power of nature.
