Personal Transformation part 1

As early as 500 BCE Greek philosopher Heraclitus noted that the only thing constant was change.  The seasons flow into each other, year after year, changing the landscape around us.  We see change as the day turns into night and the moon waxes and wanes.  It's a regular part of life.  Getting in tune with the natural cycle of change and flowing with the rhythms of nature can give us a boost when seeking personal transformation.  Some examples include:


  • A yoga practice such as the sun salutation.  The word 'yoga' is derived from a Sanskrit word which means 'union' or 'to unite' and is a great way to prepare the body for meditation.  A quick search of 'yoga for healing' on, ebay's book site shows many authors that want to guide you through the process of transformation of anxiety, chronic pain, or otherwise lead you to wellness through yoga.  Maybe there is a guide there that appeals to you.

  • Other practices that encourage one to sit still and focus on the positive for a few moments each day like meditation or prayer can be very helpful, especially when practiced daily.  

  • Other daily positive practices like writing morning pages (from the Artist's Way, a great resource for unblocking creatives) can help us transform ourselves, partly by the regularity of the practice.  

  • Walking barefoot on the ground at sunrise is a new fad (which may have some value!) is being called 'earthing' and people say it gives them a lot of energy.  If any of you are morning people and want to try this, contact me and let me know if it works!

  • New beginnings are great--I love the 'new page' feeling of opening a fresh new journal or turning the page in one.  Likewise, New Year's is a fun time to set goals and plan how to accomplish them, however resolutions on January first that are difficult to keep the entire year.  A resolution is not enough!  A plan is essential, and regular check ins with how things are going can keep a person on track.  Also, for some people the new year starts on the winter solstice (December 21st) while others celebrate closer to the end of January or first of Feburary (Chinese New Year).  I like to take this whole period as a time of reflection about what kind of changes I want in the upcoming year and planning the steps to bring them about.

  • Consider following the phase of the moon and making adjustments in your process each month. As the moon is waning (or going smaller) consider, review what projects, decisions and strategies are or aren't working.  Ask yourself if there are relationships you need to release or new boundaries you need to set.  Think about what you can let go of, what needs to be released.  What isn't working?  As the moon waxes (grows larger) think about what other goals or projects need more of your focus.  Consider what else needs to be done, or what adjustments can be made so that your energy is more effective.  

Change can be disconcerting, but getting into the natural flow and rhythm of change present in nature can be a helpful place to start!
